Get Your Curls Back!!

March 13, 2011

I initially launched my blog in 2011, and this was one of my most popular posts, therefore I decided to revisit it.  The pictures are also from the original post.

One day I decided to get my hair straightened for the second time in a month and when I finally washed my hair a week later, I saw that my hair would not curl at all.  I had a few piece of hair that were curly, but for the most part I had straight hair.  I was thoroughly frustrated, but then I remembered I needed a protein treatment to give my curls back some life.  Protein is very important for your hair.  With constant dying, heat, and chemical processing, your hair loses protein each time.  Protein is what gives hair it's strength and elasticity.  There are several products on the market you can buy, but I chose to do my own homemade protein treatment.
The main ingredient I used for my protein treatment is egg.  Since my hair is really thick, I used two eggs beaten really well then I added conditioner to the mix.  I then sectioned my hair off and began applying the mixture to my dry hair, beginning from the roots to the ends.  After my hair was completely saturated with the mixture, I added a plastic shower cap and let it sit for 30minutes.  Make sure to not apply heat to your hair because it will cook the egg, making it hard to get out your hair.  I then rinsed my hair out with cold water and began to shampoo it.  After shampooing my hair I added a deep-conditioner to my hair for 15min with a plastic cap and set under a hair dryer.  This step is important because the conditioner adds back softness to your hair that the protein treatment took away.  After I rinsed the conditioner out I added Humidity Defying Leave-in-Creme by L'Oreal's EverSleek Sulfate-Free line.  I was very satisfied with the results.  My hair was back to normal.  To maintain healthy hair, protein treatments should be done every 4-6 weeks.

  2. Your hair won't fall out. Eggs are full o protein and is chemical free. If you don't follow up with a conditioner after the treatment your hair will fall out because it will be brittle and hard.

  3. the key is to keep it moisturized right?....i like the curls, but i only use the egg for deep conditioning with mayo....miss jessies is way too expensive for my budget - i use flax seed boilings.

  4. Although hair needs moisture, if your hair lacks protein it isn't able to hold curl. Hair is mostly protein and if it lacks protein then it will break and fall out.

  5. What kind of conditioner did you use for the mixture? and what's a good deep conditioner to use afterward?

    1. I can't remember what conditioner I used, but I always use a cheap conditioner because I use lots of it. The conditioner let's you apply it easier because of the cream based. As far as a good deep conditioner, I enjoy using Curl Plenish by Mizani's True Texture lines. There are lots of conditioners you can use though.

    1. No my hair is still wet after the treatment. You can always try this treatment, when you're home for the day. By doing so, your hair can air dry. You can always use a blow dryer or sit underneath a hair dryer, in order to dry your hair. Just make sure the dryer isn't on the highest setting, to avoid heat damage.

    1. Keratin treatment results usually last 2-3 months. I'm not sure if the protein treatment wil help return your hair into a curly state. It will also depend on how much heat you normally use on your hair. It doesn't hurt to try and see if the protein treatment will work.
